The Gender Identity Development Service (GIDS) closed on 28 March 2024

New services for children and young people with gender incongruence are being established, with the creation of a Northern Hub and a Southern Hub.

The Southern Hub is being formed through a partnership between Great Ormond Street Hospital, Evelina London Children’s Hospital and South London and Maudsley NHS Foundation Trust. The Northern Hub is being formed through a partnership between Alder Hey Children’s NHS Foundation Trust and the Royal Manchester Children’s Hospital.

Referrals are being managed by the National Referral Support Service for the NHS Gender Incongruence Service For Children And Young People.

Access to endocrine care for existing service users

On 12 March 2024 NHS England published the new interim policy on hormone blockers. NHS England has confirmed that young people who are already accessing endocrine care will not be affected – their treatment will continue as planned.
