Mel Lean

Trainee Clinical Psychologist

GIDS London

You’re a trainee clinical psychologist what does this mean?

I am currently studying for a doctorate and spend part of my week working with the team here at GIDS, and part of my week attending classes and doing research.

What advice would you have to someone coming to their first appointment with you?

Coming to a first appointment can bring up a whole lot of emotions for a young person and their family-  excitement, anticipation, possibly  a sense of relief but also apprehension or  worries about what will happen. It’s important to know that there is no one pathway through GIDS or one way of “doing gender”. What we hope to do here is explore what gender means for you and what might best help to support you as you develop.

When you come to your first appointment, I hope to help you feel welcome and at ease, and I look forward to getting to know you.

What is your favourite animal?

I love all of the animals, but I especially love dogs!

What is your favourite book and/or children’s book?

My favourite children’s book was “ The Treasure Hunters” by Enid Blyton. As a teen I loved “Tomorrow, when the War Began” by John Marsden, and my recent favourites are “ I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings” by Maya Angelou and “Tiny Beautiful Things” by Cheryl Strayed.
