I am Leo, a documentary film for CBBC aimed at 6-12 year olds which focused on one of our Gender Identity Development Service (GIDS) patients, has won a Children’s BAFTA for best factual programme.
The story follows 13 year old Leo, who was born a girl, in his journey to get his first male passport and be accepted as a boy. Director of our GIDS, Dr Polly Carmichael, appeared in the documentary.
Since I am Leo first aired a year ago, there’s been keen interest in the service, with a focus on the increase in referrals and the under-five population. As well as engaging with the media, Dr Carmichael responded with this blog.
